Calliope River Rest Area

River Ranch (near Gladstone), Queensland

Famous free 48-hour rest area on the banks of the Calliope River, 26km west of Gladstone just off the Bruce Highway, run by Gladstone Regional Council. Camp on the high northern side near the Historical Village or the southern side, which has a large septic toilet block; best suited to self-contained travellers. Take care swimming - box jellyfish stings have occurred in the river.
