What to check before you buy in Queensland

The seller needs a current safety certificate
In a private sale the seller must give you a current safety certificate. It is valid for 2 months or 2,000 km, whichever comes first, and the registration cannot be transferred to you without it. No certificate, no transfer.

The seller does their part first, then you finish the transfer within 14 days, online or at a customer service centre. You pay the transfer fee and vehicle registration duty. You need a Queensland driver licence number or a TMR customer reference number, and a Queensland address.

- 1See the car before any money movesNever pay a deposit, a holding fee or shipping for a car you have not seen in person. In the groups we read, the same Honda CR-V was listed twice under two names and two prices, with payment in euros possible.
- 2Run a PPSR search ($2)Search the VIN on the official PPSR site: it shows money owing (a lender can take the car back from you), a write-off record and a stolen report. Do it on the day, not from a screenshot the seller sends. ppsr.gov.au
- 3Get an independent pre-purchase inspectionA mobile mechanic or a motoring club inspection costs far less than a blown head gasket in the outback. Pick the mechanic yourself, never one the seller recommends.
- 4Match the papers to the car and the personThe VIN and plates on the rego papers must match the car, and the seller's ID must match the owner on the papers. Ask for service records and receipts for recent work.
- 5Test drive it coldAsk the seller not to start it before you arrive. Listen for rattles on start-up, check for smoke, look under the car for leaks and rust, and drive at highway speed.
- 6Pay safely and get a receiptPay when the papers are signed, to an Australian account in the owner's name, and get a written receipt with the date, price, VIN, plates and both names.
Scam patterns we see in the groups
- The seller has already left Australia and wants a deposit to "hold" or ship the car.
- The same car appears under different names or prices, often in several groups.
- Payment to a foreign bank account, in euros, or through a payment link or courier service.
- Pressure: "leaving tomorrow, first to pay gets it" before you have seen it.
- A price far below similar cars, or a seller who will only meet somewhere other than the address they gave.

No. Never pay for a car you have not seen in person, and never pay a deposit to hold or ship a car. Sellers who are already overseas and want money first are the most common car scam in backpacker groups.
