A legitimate farm job never asks you to pay to get hired. Walk away if there is an upfront deposit or job-finding fee, no business name or ABN, vague pay, cash only with no payslips, or a hostel charging rent while you wait for work that never starts. Check the ABN and the award rate before you travel.
Red flags to walk away from
Upfront fees
Any 'deposit', 'placement fee' or paid 'job pack' to secure farm work. Legitimate employers do not charge you to be hired.
No ABN or business name
Ask for the farm's legal name and ABN, then look it up on the ABN Lookup site. A real employer has one and will give it to you.
Vague or suspiciously high pay
'Great piece rates!' with no numbers, or promises well above what the award pays. Every pieceworker is entitled to the minimum hourly rate floor.
Cash only, no payslips
Payslips are a legal requirement and the only real proof for your 88 days. Cash-in-hand work usually cannot be counted.
The waiting-for-work hostel
A hostel that takes weeks of rent upfront while you wait for farm work that never materialises. Ask which farm, call it, and read reviews first.
Unlicensed labour hire
Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and the ACT require labour hire providers to hold a licence. Check the provider on the state register.
Anonymous ads
Facebook or WhatsApp posts with no farm name, no location and pressure to decide today. Scammers use urgency.
Deductions you never agreed to
Accommodation, transport or equipment taken out of your pay without a written agreement.
Check it before you travel

Is paying a fee for farm work in Australia legit?
No. Paying to be hired is the most common farm work scam. Legitimate farms and working hostels do not charge a job-finding fee. You may pay normal rent for a bed, but never to secure the job itself.
What is the minimum pay for farm work?
Under the Horticulture Award, casual adults get at least the casual minimum hourly rate, about $31 an hour from 1 July 2025 including the 25% casual loading. Piece rates must let an average competent picker earn at least 15% more than that.
Can reporting my employer affect my visa?
The Fair Work Ombudsman and Home Affairs have an Assurance Protocol: if you have been exploited at work, your visa will generally not be cancelled for breaching a work-related condition if you seek help from Fair Work.
