Your working holiday in Australia: the before-you-fly checklist
First big trip without the parents? Perfect — this is everything worth sorting before you board, and (just as important) what NOT to pay for. Written for first-timers from Europe, the UK, and Latin America by people who've done the panic-Googling for you.
🛂 1. Get the visa first
Apply for the Working Holiday visa online (subclass 417 for most of Europe, UK and Canada; 462 for the US, Spain, Chile, Argentina and others). Apply through the official immi.homeaffairs.gov.au site only — never pay an 'agency' to submit a form you can do yourself in an hour. Most grants come through within days to weeks. Don't book non-refundable flights before it's granted.
🏥 2. Insurance before anything else
Australia's healthcare is excellent and expensive. Some countries have reciprocal Medicare deals (UK, Ireland, Italy, and more) — check if yours does — but travel insurance covering the whole year is still the norm. Working holiday-specific policies exist that cover farm work injuries; standard tourist policies often don't.
💰 3. The money question
Immigration can ask for evidence of ~AU$5,000 plus a fare home; in practice most travellers land with AU$3,000-5,000. Your first weeks (hostel, SIM, food, transport before the first payday) burn cash faster than you expect. A multi-currency card (Wise, Revolut) beats airport exchange rates by miles.
🛏️ 4. Book the first nights only
Book a hostel for your first 3-7 nights in your landing city — no more. Plans made from your bedroom rarely survive the first week; every traveller you meet reroutes you somewhere better. Working hostels can also be a soft landing if you want a job lined up fast.
📱 5. What waits until you land
Tax File Number (TFN): free, 10 minutes on the ATO website, do it your first week — you cannot legally be paid properly without it, and anyone charging for a TFN 'service' is scamming you. Bank account: open online up to 3 months before arrival or in a branch on arrival with your passport. SIM: grab one at the airport or any supermarket.
🏡 6. Leaving-home rituals
Set up a trusted contact for the people who worry. Want a second year? You'll need 88 days of paid specified work in regional Australia — farm work, mostly.
